Wimbledon marathon man John Isner got some good news in his first-round US Open win, with his dodgy ankle holding up fine under the fire of competition.
Isner rolled the ankle a fortnight ago in Cincinnati, retiring in the second round. He had worried that his New York date was lost.
"Since the injury, I was pretty much horizontal for more than a week, so I didn't really know how it was going to feel."
But there was relief in store on court. "My ankle was not an issue, the issue was my legs just from lack of training." Isner originally feared that he might have torn his ligaments, which proved not to be the case. "When I got back down to Florida. my foot started feeling better."
"It wasn't torn, it was everything but torn and it was barely hanging on. It wasn't as bad as I originally thought. That's why I'm here. In my mind, I didn't think I was going to play, I just didn't think my ankle was ready."
