    Ferrer cruises, Verdasco survives in five David Ferrer eased into the second round of the US Open with a straight-set victory over Alexandr Dolgopolov Tuesday afternoon. The Spaniard is joined by countryman Fernando Verdasco, who won his opener in five sets.

    Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco survived an opening-round scare against oppponent Fabio Fognini on Tuesday. After splitting the first two sets, aggressive play earned the Spaniard a critical break to 3-2 in the deciding set. With the first-round success, the 26-year-old avenged the loss he suffered to Fognini at Wimbledon.

    Verdasco completed the three-hour and 20-minute match with 13 winners and 41 aces. He faces Adrian Mannarino of France in the second round.

    (10) David Ferrer def. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2, 6-3

    Tenth seed David Ferrer encountered little trouble during his first-round clash with Alexandr Dolgopolov. The Spaniard held all but one service game en route to a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory in 86 minutes of play. The 28-year-old struck 6 aces and converted seven of 8 break chances during the match.

    Ferrer moves on to battle Benjamin Becker in the next round. The German downed compatriot Daniel Brands in the opening round, 7-6(1), 7-6(5), 6-4.
