  • Federer happy to discuss one of his greatest hits

    8/31/10 9:28 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer happy to discuss one of his greatest hits Roger Federer won't talk about how he pulled off his "Wilhelm Tell" trick on viral video, but the ATP No. 2 is perfectly fine with discussing his second between-the-legs winner in as many years at the US Open.

He produced the spectacular shot during a first-round victory over Argentine Brian Dabul at night in New York, chasing a lob from the net to the backcourt and reversing his body position just in time to fire his unorthodox winner to a far corner of the court.

The second seed admits: that's not something he can train for. "I don't know if you can call it practise. I don't go like, 'Feed me a few of those.' It just happens or not, and you try to do. you probably hit one max at practice."

Federer said that he could tell from the moment his racket touched the ball that all was good. "By the time I turn around it's already in the corner of the court on the other side. I'm not even sure if I saw the bounce or not, and then obviously the crowd gave me the answer, which was kind of good."

Federer says he has occasionally taken a glance at some of the "greatest hits" compilations of his shotmaking on the internet. "Those guys on the net, they find that stuff. That's fantastic that they put it all together."

"I've pulled up some incredible shots throughout my career obviously in terms of length, just sheer talent or sheer importance of the moment because it all kind of comes together. Today was just great shot making."

There is this man who warms my heart each time he expresses his admiration for his tennis idol. This man who is the most loyal fan of said idol, this man who never ceases to be astonished with his idol's achievements. This man's adulation just warms my heart. This man who sees his idol in the mirror.

Roger can't help it if he is the most supremely gifted tennis player. He is honest enough to express his open admiration for the idol whose achievements never fail to amaze him.

Federer is in awe of himself.

nadline , 8/31/10 10:26 PM

Lol!!!!!!........Federer is so funny........can just imagine him and Merca sitting at the PC watching his 'fantastics' shots on UTube!!

But cut him some slack guys, Im sure Rafa and the other tennis players do the same.......lol!!!

why would he deny he has a great talent? i think he is humble to say he does.

croc , 8/31/10 11:50 PM

No point being humble and always keep saying "I love to play" "I love to play" . Go out there and ruffle some feathers brusie some ego . Create a drama. Its great for entertainment , great for fans. It happens in other sports !

I wanted to see in the live

@nirv02: For sure Wonderful(more or less) things happen everywhere not only in sports. And there are comments/reactions on if they are reported/published, or if the person or group of persons doing it are interviewed about it we also have their reactions. So what the big deal with RF answering questions about his new amazing between the legs shot at USO. If he had answered by saying "yes you don't have to do a lot about this, it's just a normal (which is not, oh no) shot" some people will still be here firing him by all sort of names. Plus in this particular interview I don't see the "I love to play" "I love to play". It was a funny itw
Bref c'est clair qu'on ne peut definitivement pas plaire a tous le monde!

problem is federer is supremely talented and what a fantastic shot! Everyone said it! Even dabul said - 'it was perfect', so why should federer disagree? To think that some called the first shot between the legs last year against djokovic was 'lucky'. And Federer is able to do it again. Pure brilliance.

Nadline, you are boring when it comes to Federer. Your surliness preceeds you. When you read comments that you say about rafa, just ridiculous. All you can comment on is his shorts/body/smile, pathetic. you don't even watch any of the matches rafa plays! you come on after the event, when it's all over and done with -

Federer produces a fabulously gifted shot, admired by the crowd through a standing ovation, and you cannot even appreciate it - minority verdict. yawn.

Federer is a star.

chlorostoma, it's called a reflection.

I think Roger should drop the false modesty and pretense and open up. He is the most successful and probably greatest player of all time. He has beaten practically every record and he is the most famous tennis player in the world. Has he earned the right to say so? Certainly!
Nirv02, I agree. Even McEnroe while commenting on Rafa's match yesterday said there is too much politeness. He mentioned boxing and how the fighters talk smack about each other, fight with passion and without apology, and at the end hug each other. In tennis instead, he complained, players apologize when they don't mean it and often don't even look at each other during a forced handshake at the end of the match.
Roger, take some clues from Mohamed Ali!

grafight: you've lost me. False modesty is not something you could ever accuse Roger of. Or were you being ironical?
