Andy Roddick advanced to the second round with a straight set win over Stephane Robert on opening day in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
American Andy Roddick made a successful start to his 2010 US Open title bid with a 1 hour 43 minute victory over France’s Stephane Robert 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
For much of the first set, Roddick appeared on his way to dishing out a bagel. The American had 5-0 before Robert held for the first time. Roddick had the chance to serve out the set, but Robert was able to break the American for the first time in the match.
The Frenchman was able to put another game on the board, but Roddick made good on his next attempt to serve out the set.
Robert had 4 more looks on the Roddick serve in the third set, but the American found his serve at just the right moments to stave off each. Roddick had just 8 aces for the match, but he served at 68%. He will take on the winner of Olivier Rochus and Janko Tipsarevic in the second round.
