Gael Monfil just barely got past the big-serving American Robert Kendrick in his opening round match. His countryman Richard Gasquet had a much easier time of it.
Gael Monfils def. Robert Kendrick 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4
This tough 5-set match was a dog-fight throughout, but got controversial as the match was coming to a close. After looking tired and hot in the first set, Monfils rallied in the second and third sets. The Frenchman had his chances to close out the match in 4 sets, but he was unable to do so. Kendrick and his powerful serving had the advantage in the tiebreaker to force the deciding set.
The controversy happened at 4-4 in the final set with Monfils serving. The Frenchman appeared to clip the ball before it landed out. The chair umpire gave the point to Monfils, which sent Kendrick into a tirade. The American lost his next service game and the match along with it.
Richard Gasquet def. Simon Greul 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
Unlike his French compatriot, Richard Gasquet had no difficulty getting past Simon Greul of Germany on Monday. The German converted on just 1 break point opportunity; Gasquet converted on 5 for the match. The straight-set victory lasted just under 2 hours.
Gasquet moves into the second round against Russian ironman Nikolay Davydenko.
