Sergiy Stakhovsky and Denis Istomin book spots in the New Haven final on Friday. They defeat Thiemo De Bakker and Viktor Troicki, respectively.
Not long after upsetting top-seeded Marcos Baghdatis in a third-set tiebreaker, Sergiy Stakhovsky beat Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 6-4 to reach the final of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Friday afternoon. Stakhovsky needed one hour and 22 minutes to set up a clash against Denis Istomin.
The Ukrainian served impressively in the day's first semifinal, firing seven aces without double-faulting while never facing a single break point. Stakhovsky dropped a mere 10 points in 10 service games. As such, one break in each set was enough for the world No. 47 to pocket a relatively routine victory.
Istomin--as had been the case with him throughout the week--had a much more difficult time of things with Viktor Troicki. Uzbekistan's No. 1 player saved four match points in his semifinal against Teymuraz Gabashvili and he won a thrilling first set on Friday 12-10 in a tiebreaker.
Troicki fought back in the second, earning two breaks of his opponent's serve, and the 10th-seeded Serb appeared to be on the way to a win early in set three. The world No. 45 led by a break, but Istomin stormed break and added three breaks in a flurry to suddenly dominate the rest of the way. Istomin's sixth break of the match at 5-2 in the third finished off the proceedings in style.
The world No. 46 struck eight aces against no double-faults and he won 61 percent of his second-serve return points.
