Thiemo De Bakker and Viktor Troicki ease through the New Haven quarterfinals on Thursday. They are joined in the last four by Denis Istomin, who saved four match points against Teymuraz Gabashvili.
(12) Thiemo De Bakker d. Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 6-3
De Bakker needed one hour 22 minutes to see off Korolev and book a spot in the semifinals of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament on Thursday. The 21-year-old Dutchman earned the first break of the match at 3-3 and he did not face a single break point in the opening set so the lone break was enough. Korolev lost six straight games from 3-2 in the first to 0-2 in the second, but he got a break back and eventually took a 3-2 lead in set two. De Bakker, however, turned things around and won the next four games for victory. New Haven's No. 12 seed wrapped up his effort with five aces and no double-faults.
(10) Viktor Troicki d. (LL) Radek Stepanek 6-2, 6-3
Stepanek enjoyed a good week as a lucky loser, but his luck went out in a flash against Troicki on Thursday night. Troicki broke serve seven times in nine return games and raced into the semifinals after just one hour and six minutes. The match opened with five straight breaks before Troicki finally held for a 4-2 advantage. After winning the next two games for the set, the 10th-seeded Serb failed to serve out the second frame of play at 5-2. Nonetheless, Troicki ended it in appropriate fashion one game later with his seventh scalp of the Stepanek serve. Next up for Troicki is Denis Istomin,
(15) Denis Istomin d. Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(8)
Istomin staged a flurry of comebacks to outlast Gabashvili in two hours and 18 minutes in the New Haven quarterfinals. The world No. 46 from Uzbekistan won the first set with ease, but he dropped the second and quickly fell behind in the third. Istomin, however, battled back from a break down on two different occasions and then fought off four match points in the tiebreaker. He finally prevailed 10 points to eight to book a hard-earned spot in the semis. Istomin fired 13 aces while Gabashvili recorded five aces and saved nine of 13 break points.
