  • Baghdatis keeps plugging away at Pilot Pen

    8/26/10 3:31 AM | Ricky Dimon
Baghdatis keeps plugging away at Pilot Pen Marcos Baghdatis comes back from a set deficit to beat Juan Ignacio Chela on Wednesday in New Haven. Baghdatis is joined in the quarterfinals by Radek Stepanek, a three-set winner over Victor Hanescu.

It looked like Marcos Baghdatis' U.S. Open preparation would finally come to an end on Wednesday. Instead, Baghdatis continued his winning ways.

The 18th-ranked Cypriot, a runner-up in Washington a semifinalist in Cincinnati, overcame Juan Ignacio Chela 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament. Baghdatis needed just one hour and 25 minutes to set up a meeting with either Tommy Robredo or Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Chela came out firing and took advantage of an understandably weary opponent in the first set. The 31-year-old Argentine surrendered his own serve once, but broke serve three times in three chances to take complete control of the match.

At that point, however, Baghdatis apparently decided that he wanted his hot streak to continue. New Haven's No. 1 seed bounced back with two breaks in the second and he utterly dominated the third despite putting in a mere 38 percent of his serves in his last four service games. Baghdatis finished with six aces and two double-faults while converting five of nine break-point opportunities.

Radek Stepanek also advanced to the quarterfinals with a three-set victory. The 30-year-old Czech took down No. 16 seed Victor Hanescu 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-4 in two hours and 39 minutes of play.

Not a single break of serve was to be throughout the first two sets. Hanescu saved two break points in the first set and neither man earned a break chance in the second. The 6'6'' Romanian finally surrendered serve in the third, but he almost stole it back in the final game of the match. Stepanek fought off one break point at 5-4 before closing it out for victory.

Next up for Stepanek is either No. 7 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov or 10th-seeded Viktor Troicki.
