Radek Stepanek advances in New Haven on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Fernando Gonzalez. Marcos Baghdatis is also through to the third round.
Fernando Gonzalez's comeback from knee tendonitis came to a swift halt on Tuesday as he went down to Radek Stepanek 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament. Gonzalez, who had not played since the French Open, succumbed in one hour and 10 minutes in what will be his only warmup match for the U.S. Open.
Stepanek has also been out for an extensive period of time this season, but unlike Gonzalez, he already has five matches under his belt this week. The 31-year-old Czech lost in the final round of qualifying, but he got a lucky loser entry into the main draw when Cincinnati runner-up Mardy Fish pulled out.
Continuing to take advantage of the opportunity, Stepanek seized an early break against Gonzalez and never looked back. The world No. 30 faced no break points in the first set and although he gave back a quick break in the second, he recovered it with little trouble. Stepanek served out the proceedings at 5-4 and wrapped up his effort with 14 of 21 second-serve points won.
Marcos Baghdatis joined Stepanek in the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Igor Andreev. Baghdatis, a semifinalist last week in Cincinnati, kept up his hot streak after one hour and 33 minutes of play on Tuesday evening.
The 18th-ranked Cypriot served dismally (41 percent, five double-faults), but he saved all three of the break points he faced in set one. Baghdatis led by two breaks at 3-0 in the second, and although he gave one back for 3-1, he served things out the rest of the way. Up next for the top seed is 14th-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela.
