Alexandr Dolgopolov eases past James Blake on Wednesday in New Haven. Tommy Robredo and Viktor Troicki have also advanced to the third round.
(7) Alexandr Dolgopolov d. (WC) James Blake 6-4, 6-2
Blake's campaign at the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament got off to a strong start when he crushed Pere Riba in 35 minutes, but it came to a crashing halt against Dolgopolov on Wednesday. The 30-year-old American, a hometown favorite in New Haven, won fewer than half of his first-serve points and was broken four times. Blake made up one of the breaks in the first set, but Dolgpolov took care of his serve all the way in set two despite making fewer than 30 percent of his first deliveries. Next up for the 21-year-old Ukrainian is Viktor Troicki.
(10) Viktor Troicki d. Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 6-3
Troicki was one game away from victory on Tuesday night, but the skies opened up again and forced him to come back out on Wednesday afternoon. The 45th-ranked Serb made no mistake upon returning, needing only five minutes to close out Nieminen. Troicki wrapped up his effort with eight aces and he did not face a break point the entire way. New Haven's No. 10 seed also served at an impressive 82 percent in the second set, hardly giving his opponent any chance.
(6) Tommy Robredo d. (WC) Taylor Dent 5-7, 6-4, 6-4
Robredo has been in a dismal slump this season, but he battled back nicely from a set deficit to beat Dent in two hours and 11 minutes on Tuesday. The 39th-ranked Spaniard got off two a slow start when a rain delay halted play at 6-5 in the first set, after which Robredo came back out and promptly dropped serve. After New Haven's No. 6 seed won the second, a pair of breaks were exchanged early in the third before Robredo earned the decisive break at 3-2. Dent, who was doomed by nine double-faults, could not get back on serve.
