  • Young, Nieminen advance at Pilot Pen

    8/24/10 2:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Young, Nieminen advance at Pilot Pen Donald Young and Jarkko Nieminen kick off their Newport campaigns in victorious fashion on Monday. They are joined in the second round by Igor Andreev, who dismissed Arnaud Clement.

(WC) Donald Young d. Stephane Robert 6-1, 6-2

Young earned his third ATP-level victory of the season on Monday, rolling past Stephane Robert in just 55 minutes to reach the second round of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament. The 21-year-old American dominated in every facet of the game, giving his opponent a free hard-court lesson. Young played the big points--if there were any big points in this blowout--especially well, converting four of five break chances and saving all three of the break points he faced. Next up for the wild card is No. 14 seed Juan Ignacio Chela.

    Jarkko Nieminen d. Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4

Nieminen turned in a rock-solid performance on Monday in New Haven, ousting Seppi in one hour and eight minutes. The veteran Finn never dropped serve nor did he face a single break point. After serving out the first set at 5-3, Nieminen maintained control by dropping a mere four service points in the second set, a span of five service games. Seppi was doomed by an inability to take care of his second serve, as the Italian won only 44 percent of those points, including five of 15 during the second frame of play. Nieminen will go up against Viktor Troicki in the second round.

    Igor Andreev d. Arnaud Clement 7-6(2), 6-3

Andreev also prevailed in straight sets on Monday, but it was hardly in straightforward fashion against Clement. The Russian needed one hour and 51 minutes to pull out the victory and set up a meeting with No. 1 seed Marcos Baghdatis. A pair of breaks were exchanged in the first set en route to a tiebreaker, at which point Clement's serve failed him. The Frenchman won only two points in the decider and could not recover in the second, although it was decided by just a single break. Andreev fired six aces in set two and saved all three of the break points he faced to secure the win.
