Both of the players who figured in the long longest match in tennis history have come up injured with the US Open start in sight.
Winner John Isner, who beat Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in their three-day, first-round Wimbledon match, is nursing an ankle problem after rolling it during a match in Cincinnati. Mahut retired from a Challenger match in mid-August, and his status unknown.
Mahut, ranked 160th in the world, will not figure in the draw for the last major of the season starting August 30. Isner is rushing for fitness hoping that he can front up at Flushing Meadows.
American Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe, wearing a television commentator hat, said that Isner was at least questionable. "It sounds like it may be more severe than initially we thought. John is questionable for the U.S. Open."
Isner had a scan in Cincinnati but will wait until the last minute to make a decision. The Open has already been rocked by the withdrawal of Serena Williams and men's 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro - both due to injuries.
Isner said that it all went wrong for him in his second-round loss to David Nalbandian. "When I landed, my right foot just twisted really quick on the outside - that was it. I couldn't play after that." The American said he'll do what he can to be ready to play. "I don't think the US Open is in doubt. I didn't sprain it. I rolled it pretty good. But in 10 days' time, I'll be fine."
