  • Gonzalez returns in New Haven

    8/22/10 3:00 PM | Ricky Dimon
Gonzalez returns in New Haven Fernando Gonzalez is making his return to tennis just in time for a U.S. Open tuneup. He is the No. 3 seed this week in New Haven, where Cincinnati semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis headlines the field.

With the U.S. Open just one week away, players hoping to get some last-minute work under their belts will be descending on the campus of Yale University in New Haven for the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament.

Among those in action will be Fernando Gonzalez, who has not played since the French Open due to knee tendinitis. The 29th-ranked Chilean was hoping to return earlier this month at the Rogers Cup, but he pulled out with a sore calf muscle. Gonzalez is the No. 3 seed in New Haven and on a collision course for the quarterfinals with seventh-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, who took him out at Roland Garros.

Gonzalez and Dolgopolov would have to win only two matches to progress that far, as the 16 seeded players receive byes to the second round in a 48-man field. Baghdatis leads the way as the No. 1 seed in the aftermath of his semifinal showing in Cincinnati, while Thomaz Bellucci is seeded second. Mardy Fish would be the No. 4 seed and a potential semifinal opponent for Baghdatis, but the American is likely to withdraw having made it all the way to the Cincinnati title match.

A Fish pullout would open the door Thiemo De Bakker in the second quarter of the Pilot Pen draw. The 21-year-old Dutchman is seeded 12th and--aside from Fish--has to be considered the favorite in a section that merely includes seeds Florian Mayer and Michael Berrer along with unseeded players Ilya Marchenko and Evgeny Korolev.

While Fish clearly needs no more preparation for the U.S. Open, the same cannot be said for some of his countrymen. Taylor Dent, who reached the third round last year in New York, got a wild card into New Haven and has a good opportunity against Eduardo Schwank in round one and possibly Tommy Robredo in round two. James Blake, mired in a dismal slump, opens against Pere Riba and could face Dolgopolov in the second round.
