Andy Roddick closes out Thiemo De Bakker in straight sets on Wednesday in Cincinnati. Robin Soderling joins Roddick in the third round thanks to a three-set victory over Lleyton Hewitt.
Andy Roddick may have been dealing with a mild case of mononucleosis in recent months, but he has already fared better in Cincinnati than he has since 2006. Roddick beat Thiemo De Bakker 7-6(4), 6-4 to reach the third round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on Wednesday evening.
The 11th-ranked American won only a single match at this event in his previous two appearances combined and he did not play in 2008. Roddick had some early trouble with De Bakker as neither man could break serve in set one, but the No. 9 seed won return points at 5-4 and 6-4 in the tiebreaker to take the opening frame of play.
With momentum in hand, Roddick broke for a 2-1 lead in the second and served out the match from there. De Bakker also took care of his serve the rest of the way, but the 21-year-old Dutchman won only four points in his last five return games. Roddick finished with eight aces and two double-faults while winning 33 of 37 first-serve points.
Robin Soderling set up a third-round clash with Roddick by outlasting Lleyton Hewitt 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 56 minutes. Soderling avenged a first-round loss to Hewitt in last year's Cincinnati first round while firing 15 aces against just one double-fault.
Hewitt came out in blistering form to take the first set, but his level dropped as Soderling improved from the baseline and--in the third set--on serve. After giving back an immediate break in the third frame of play, the fifth-seeded Swede struck a backhand pass on break point at 5-5 in the third set to reclaim the advantage. Soderling served out the match with ease, cracking a final ace to wrap up his effort in style.
Soderling scored his first career win over Hewitt in four tries. The world No. 5 is 2-1 lifetime against Roddick.

Ricky: I like your match reports. They are very informative. If I didn't see the match, reading your report would make me feel as though I was watching it.
I think Roddick was playing very defensively against deBakker, as opposed to their previous two meetings, when Andy was able to win easily, but that could be due to the improvement deBakker has made to his game. Andy looked very pale and drawn in his countenance, but I think that's due to the mono he's fighting. Additionally, since returning to the tour at the FO, he's exited the previous tournaments he's played very early, with the exception of Atlanta, where he got to the SFs. I think he has a lot of rust to work out, and hopefully, he'll be able to get some more matches under his belt, which will enable him to become more match-grooved for the USO. here's hoping ....
So sorry about Isner's foot injury. He has to learn to tape his feet/ankles.
