  • Nadal takes care of Dent in straight sets

    8/18/10 9:16 PM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal takes care of Dent in straight sets Rafael Nadal made a successful start to his Cincinnati campaign with a straight set victory over American Taylor Dent.

Rafael Nadal was all business on Wednesday in his first match at the Western and Southern Financial Group Masters. The Spaniard broke Dent’s serve right out of the gate and secured another in the American’s next service game to take a 3-0 lead. Dent did not get on the board until 0-4.

With Dent serving at an anemic 55% for the set, Nadal rolled to a 6-2 lead in just over 30 minutes.

The second set was far more competitive from Dent. The American took advantage of a string of missed first serves to take the first break in the set. The lead was short-lived. Nadal broke back immediately and secured the match-winning break at 5-5 to advance to the third round.

Vamosrafa, I think it's a matter of opinion. I've heard John Mac praising Rafa many times about his volleying skills since last year's USO. I can see improvements in Rafa's volleying skills. In fact among the current players, I'll put Fed, Murray and Rafa as three of the best out there in terms of volleying skills, together with pure S&V players like Llodra.

I'm happy with Rafa's improvements in net plays and he really knows the right time to approach the net. I'm looking forward to him adding some S&V into his game to make his game more interesting, with more surprise elements n more options at his disposals.

we know rafa isnt a natural volleyer...he deserves plenty of crdt as his improvements in that departments have been tremendous. however, i think he still isnt a volleyer of fed's caliber. Fed is more comfortable at the net and he can punch through his volleys a lot better and fed's reflexes are sublime. yup , mcenroe loves rafa's volleys now...he was at the top of his voice when rafa hit that low bakhand drop volley winner against muzza in the tie brk at wimbledon (down set pnt)...

and talking about good volleyers, i would include stepanek and tsonga in the list too.
