John Isner crushes Lukasz Kubot in straight sets on Tuesday night in Cincinnati. Next up for Isner is David Nalbandian, who cruised past Ivan Ljubicic.
John Isner made quick work of his opening match at the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on Tuesday, routing Lukasz Kubot 6-2, 6-3. Isner needed a mere 58 minutes to set up a second-round showdown with David Nalbandian.
Kubot had not played since Wimbledon due to an ankle injury and he showed plenty of rust in his return to tennis. The 61st-ranked Pole won only 27 percent of his second-serve points and he gifted two of the three breaks to Isner thanks to double-faults.
Isner, at the same time, never allowed his opponent to get into any kind of rhythm by serving big and playing aggressive tennis. The 6'9'' American blasted 11 aces without double-faulting, dropped only 10 points in nine service games, and never faced a break point.
Nalbandian enjoyed a similarly routine performance against Ljubicic. A pair of breaks were exchanged early in the first set, but Nalbandian had things in cruise control the rest of the way. The 37th-ranked Argentine did not face another break point and he broke serve at 6-5 to finish off the opening frame of play in style.
Ljubicic completely disappeared after that, winning a miniscule six points in the entire second set. The 31-year-old Croat won zero of seven second-serve points in set two (a shockingly bad one of 19 for the match) and earned just one point against Nalbandian's serve. Ljubicic also double-faulted seven times; as if his in-form opponent needed any extra help.
