Ernests Gulbis and American Mardy Fish moved into the Cincinnati second round with wins on Tuesday.
Ernests Gulbis def. Donald Young 7-6(5), 6-4
American Donald Young played well enough to stay with Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis for the first set of their opening round match. The American even started off with a break of Gulbis’s serve – but he was broken directly back. The rest of the set remained on serve to force the tiebreaker. The Latvian did not gain the advantage until the ninth point, which he held onto for the one set lead.
Gulbis ran away with the second set; he secured a pair of service breaks in the 3rd and 5th games of the set to take a 5-1 lead. Unfortunately for the Latvian, Young broke back when Gulbis was serving for the match at 5-2. Young drew to 4-5 before Gulbis served out the win.
Mardy Fish def. Gilles Simon 7-6(4), 7-5
France’s Gilles Simon and Mardy Fish of the United States played the battle of the serves in the first set. There were no breaks of serve and a total of 18 aces, 10 for Simon and 8 for Fish. The American drew first blood in the tiebreak, but he gave the advantage directly back to Simon. Fish won the last 3 points to take the set.
Fish served for the second set at 5-3, after breaking Simon at 2-3. The American threw in an ugly service game to drop serve and give up the lead, but with Simon serving to force another tiebreak, he was broken for a second time.
Fish will take on No. 8 seed Fernando Verdasco in the second round.
