Andy Roddick defeats Sergiy Stakhovsky in three sets on Monday night at the Cincinnati Masters. Roddick is joined in the second round by Thiemo De Bakker, who ousted Juan Monaco.
Andy Roddick booked a spot in the second round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters on Monday night, surviving Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1. Roddick, who has slumped since winning the Miami title and recently revealed a mild case of mononucleosis, advanced after two hours and 15 minutes.
One break was enough for Cincinnati's No. 9 seed to take the first set, but he ran into more difficulty during the second frame of play. Stakhovsky won 25 of 27 first-serve points and held all the way to a tiebreaker. Roddick faced just one break point en route to the 'breaker, but he lost it seven points to five and thus was forced into a third set.
Stakhovsky went away quietly over the final set, although he did put up a stellar fight just to get on the scoreboard. The 48th-ranked Ukrainian fought off four match points and eventually won a 12-minute game at 0-5 before Roddick served out the proceedings one game later.
Next up for the 11th-ranked American is Thiemo De Bakker, who needed two hours and 24 minutes to get past Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3. De Bakker fired 11 aces (one more than Roddick struck against Stakhovsky) and converted four of five break chances.
Monaco, sidelined since the French Open with a wrist injury, donated an early break in the first set and never got it back. The 31st-ranked Argentine recovered to win the second in a tiebreaker, but he ran out of gas in the third and surrendered a pair of breaks. De Bakker gave one back, but the 21-year-old Dutchman closed things out on serve at 5-3.

I felt persistent to stay awake for matches on the 16th on my computer, Tennis OHIO 2010. I savoured some moments with Warwinka, Hanescu & Matthieu's 3rd sets, followed by Monac and De Bakker; and since it's of a fave player I had to rummage the old brain to stay awake for it......De Bakker who is a new player for me, proved his capability with the sport is getting better, confidently swindling the first set to his favor; as Monac push further more to take the second and at last, De Bakker or Thiemo ties his winning match at 6-3 set three......Both were aware of the commotion on handling the hot heat from the Glass Cap of the World. Cincinnatti was founded mainly for retired veterans of war......TENNIS holds the key to even beautiful, and beneficial f'azion. Thanks.
