Richard Gasquet overcame an opening set deficit to upset Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny in 3
No. 12 seed Mikhail Youzhny started off strong in his first match at the 2010 Cincinnati Masters. The Russian had his first chance to break Gasquet’s serve at 1-1. The Frenchman fought off 2 break points, but Youzhny managed to secure the lead on his third.
He wrapped up the set with a second service break and a firm hold on the match momentum.
Gasquet was not unsettled. In the second set, the Frenchman, ranked 41 in the world, raised his first serve percentage from 50% to 66% and the improved statistics paid dividends.
Youzhny had no chances to break in the middle set. As the set wore on, the Russian became visibly rattled, yelling at himself and hitting erratically.
The third set was all Gasquet. The Frenchman sunk his teeth into the match and gave up just s single service game in the set. He will take on Germany’s Michael Berrer in the second round.
