As usual, Roger Federer is showing no cracks in his championship facade heading into play at Cincinnati after losing the Toronto final to Andy Murray.
The Swiss world No. 2 exhibits his usual supreme confidence as he begins competition at the event where he is defending the title.
Federer said that his tight loss at the weekend has given him more data on the current state of his game after ending his long post-Wimbledon pause. "I had some issues sometimes, whatever, whether it was on the serve, forehand, backhand. That's normal," said the 16-time Grand Slam winner. "That's more from not playing enough matches lately and some rust.
"But I still made the finals and beat great players along the way who have caused me difficulties in the past."
The Swiss, back up to second on the ATP after displacing Novak Djokovic to third, has few major complaints with his form as the countdown tothe US Open in just under a fortnight speeds up.
"I'm really happy with how I've been playing, and this gives me obviously great information how I want to play the big points, what I need to do this upcoming week or so. I'm not just preparing for Cincinnati and the US Open but also the rest of the season. It's definitely a good start into the hardcourt season."
