American Taylor Dent scored an upset win over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in first round action on Monday in Cincinnati.
Taylor Dent def. Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-2
Cincinnati qualifier Taylor Dent stormed past a lackluster Feliciano Lopez in straight sets. Spain’s Lopez was undone by the Dent serve. In the first game of the match alone, the American served 3 aces.
Lopez’s backhand let him down repeatedly during the one hour match. He had particular difficulty with the backhand pass, which failed against Dent’s net game. The American posted 3 service breaks for the match and fought off all 4 break points against his own serve.
The win sends Dent into the second round against world No. 1 Rafael Nadal.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-3
Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka was efficient in his first round win over Spain’s Nicolas Almagro. The Spaniard donated a host of unforced errors to Wawrinka’s cause. The Swiss man smacked 8 aces in the 1 hour 11 minute match and fought off each of the 3 break points against him.
Almagro had a great season during the post-Wimbledon clay season, but the North American hard court swing has proven difficult for the Spaniard.
Wawrinka will take on the winner of Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra in the second round.
