World No. 2 Novak Djokovic made the final eight in Toronto Thursday evening, following his 6-3, 6-4 victory over round of 16 opponent Victor Hanescu. The second seed is through to meet Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinal.
Novak Djokovic came through the third round in straight sets on Thursday, having recorded a 120-minute win against Victor Hanescu. The 23-year-old held nine of 9 service games on his way to quarterfinal berth, 6-3, 6-4. With the round of 16 victory, the Serb advanced to his 9th ATP World Tour quarter of the season.
After completing the 6-3 opening set in 42 minutes, Djokovic led early in the second. The World No. 2 continued to compete well, taking a service break lead at 1-1. Hanescu regrouped at 3-4, leveling the set with some powerful baseline play. The 23-year-old broke back immediately, aided by a careless backhand from the Romanian. Double match point came in short order for Djokovic, who closed as Hanescu pushed a forehand wide.
The second seed ended the evening with 22 winners and three of six break chances converted.
Djokovic will face Jeremy Chardy for a spot in the semifinal. The Frenchman upset 6th seed Nikolay Davydenko in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-2.
