World No. 2 Novak Djokovic fought his way through a difficult opener against veteran Frenchman Julien Benneteau Wednesday afternoon. The Serb advanced to the Rogers Cup round of 16 in straight sets.
Second seed Novak Djokovic endured a tough second-round encounter on Wednesday, as he held on to book a berth in the Rogers Cup round of 16. The 2007 Masters Canada champion, suffering with breathing-related issues, sealed a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Julien Benneteau in two hours and 13 minutes.
A shaky opening set had Djokovic lose serve twice to trail 1-3. The Serb fought back to level, aided by an errant backhand from Benneteau. A handful of missed first serves and unforced errors helped the World No. 2 to set point at 6-5. A drop-shot winner gave Djokovic the 7-5 set in 60 minutes of play.
Djokovic looked to struggle physically at the start of the second set. The Serb fell behind 0-2 after striking a forehand well long. Benneteau gave away the lead, gifting a double fault to 2-2. Djokovic surrendered serve in the following game, unable to handle a backhand volley. The Frenchman served for the set at 5-4, but failed to close. The 23-year-old clawed his way back to 5-5, helped by a forehand mistake from the veteran.
Djokovic, rallying from a 3-5 deficit, missed four match points at 6-5. A fifth match point came for the World No. 2, who ended the day with a well-timed overhead smash.
The second seed completed the match with 43 winners and six of 18 break chances converted.
Djokovic will face Victor Hanescu in the round of 16. The Romanian defeated wild card Peter Polansky in the second round, 6-4, 7-6(4).
