World No. 9 Fernando Verdasco reached the second round in Toronto, after downing Eduardo Schwank Tuesday evening. The Spaniard overcame a lackluster second set to record the win in three, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
Ninth seed Fernando Verdasco made the second round at the Rogers Cup, following his opening-round victory over Eduardo Schwank. The 26-year-old survived multiple lapses in concentration to seal a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 success in one hour and 38 minutes.
Verdasco began the match quickly, racing out to a 5-0 advantage in less than 16 minutes. After missing two set point chances, the Spaniard converted a third as Schwank struck a forehand long. Verdasco closed the 21-minute set with 91% of his first-service points captured.
The World No. 9 led 3-1 in the second set, but failed to hold the lead. Schwank regrouped to 3-4, as he crushed a forehand winner on break point. Verdasco missed match point at 4-5 on the Schwank serve. Two break chances came in the 11th game for Schwank, who broke to 6-5 on a backhand winner. The Argentine went on to level at a set apiece, striking an ace on set point.
Verdasco earned a 3-1, break edge after a costly double fault from Schwank. The Argentine had two chances to recover the break at 2-4, but was unsuccessful. A settled Verdasco reached match point at 5-2, then closed with a trademark forehand blast.
The Spaniard ended the evening with 22 winners and six of 10 break chances converted.
Verdasco is slated to face Jeremy Chardy in the second round. The Frenchman held on to oust Marcos Baghdatis in the first round, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(4).
