  • Soderling holds off Gulbis to win in 3

    8/11/10 12:21 AM | Cheryl Murray
Soderling holds off Gulbis to win in 3 Sweden’s Robin Soderling weathered a tough second round match against Ernests Gulbis to advance to the third round in Toronto.

The second round match between No. 5 seed Robin Soderling and world No. 28 Ernests Gulbis was a bit of a sloppy affair. After playing the 3 sets, Gulbis racked up 36 winners and 38 unforced errors, and Soderling was just slightly better with 34 winners and 33 unforced errors.

Both men seemed to have trouble finding the lines. Many points ended with one or the other player over-hitting the baseline. The advantage was surely with the server. Neither Soderling nor Gulbis is known for their return game.

The crucial break in the set came at 5-4 on Soderling’s serve, which gave Gulbis the 6-4 lead. The Latvian had chances in both the second and third sets to stay in the match, but he could not break through on Soderling’s serve. A single break in the second and third set allowed the No. 5 seed to advance. He will play the winner of Tommy Robredo and David Nalbandian.
