Sixteenth seed Sam Querrey and Philipp Kohlschreiber earned passage into round two at the Rogers Cup, following their respective victories over qualifier Michael Russell and Janko Tipsarevic.
(16) Sam Querrey def. (Q) Michael Russell 3-6, 6-1, 6-4
World No. 21 Sam Querrey overcame a slow start to his first-round match against veteran compatriot Michael Russell on Tuesday. The 16th seed rallied from a set down to record a three-set win in one hour and 40 minutes. Querrey struck a dozen aces and secured three of 10 break point chances on the day. With the opening-round success the 22-year-old improved his season record to 34-16.
Querrey is next to meet qualifier Kevin Anderson for a place in the round of 16. The South African defeated Leonardo Mayer in the first round, 7-6(2), 6-4.
Philipp Kohlschreiber def. Janko Tipsarevic 2-2 (retired)
Philipp Kohlschreiber made the second round after opponent Janko Tipsarevic retired midway through the opening set. Tipsarevic sustained an injury to his right ankle as he went to retrieve a passing shot.
Kohlschreiber will take on Viktor Troicki in the second round. The Serb came through his opener with 11th seed Marin Cilic in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(2).
