Alexandr Dolgopolov upset the No. 12 seed in another strange 3-setter in Toronto. Michael Llodra also scored a round 2 upset.
Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Mikhail Youzhny 1-6, 7-6(4), 7-5
As he did on Tuesday, Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine got off to a slow start in his second round match against Mikhail Youzhny. Russia’s Youzhny broke Dolgopolov 3 times in the opening set alone. The Ukrainian simply could not find his range as Youzhny took the early lead.
Dolgopolov fought valiantly in the second and third sets to secure one of the biggest wins of his young career so far. The Ukrainian owes much of his success to his massive serve, which earned him 6 free points in the second set and 11 in the third. The win sends Dolgopolov into the third round where he will take on Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych.
Michael Llodra def. Nicolas Almagro 7-6(5), 6-2
France’s Michael Llodra upset the No. 14 seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain in straight sets. The first set was competitive, with no service breaks on either side of the net. The superior serving of Llodra, who hit 7 aces in the set, allwed the Frenchman to come out ahead in the tiebreaker.
The disappointment of losing the first set seemed to undermine Almagro’s confidence. The Spaniard’s first serve percentage dipped to 47% and he had no chances to break Llodra in the second set. Llodra won all but 3 points on his own serve and managed to secure a pair of breaks for the impressive win.
Llodra will take on Roger Federer in the third round.
