  • Berdych, Dolgopolov sail through in Toronto

    8/10/10 10:14 PM | Cheryl Murray
Berdych, Dolgopolov sail through in Toronto No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych had no trouble getting past opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky to move into the third round at the Rogers Cup.

Tomas Berdych def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 6-4

Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic had an easy time of it against the Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky. Berdych completely dominated the opening set. Stakhovsky did not earn a single break point, yet faced 9 on his own serve. The world No. 7 converted on a pair of opportunities to take the 6-2 lead.

Stakhovsky played much better in the second set. Berdych only had one chance to break; fortunately for the Czech man he was able to convert to take the match in straight sets.

Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Philipp Petzschner 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(4)

The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov won a strange first round match over Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in Toronto on Tuesday. Dolgopolov’s first serve percentage was nearly embarrassing, with the Ukrainian man putting in just 32% of his first serves. He paid a heavy price; Petzschner secured 2 early service breaks for the 6-1 lead.

The second set was a near copy of the first, except that the players were reversed. It was Petzschner having trouble holding serve and Dolgopolov with the 2 service breaks.

But the real strangeness in the match came in the third set. Dolgopolov took the early lead and had 40-0 to go up 4-1. He was broken there and Petzschner leveled the match. They remained on serve to force the deciding set tiebreaker.

Dolgopolov served for the match at 5-2 in the breaker, only to lose both of his serves. Petzschner responded by dropping both of his serves to give Dolgopolov the match.

It was the first match on hard court for Dolgo since February 1. He needs some time to adapt...

No doubt, Jacques. I am quite keen on Dolgo's game, but it WAS a weird match, you have to admit.
