Former World No. 3 David Nalbandian turned in a strong showing at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic late Thursday, easing into the final eight with a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Marco Chiudinelli.
Wild card David Nalbandian encountered little difficulty during his round of 16 match with Marco Chiudinelli on Thursday. The Argentine breezed into the Washington quarterfinal in a quick 45 minutes, 6-1, 6-0. With the third-round victory, the 28-year-old improved his season record to 14-3.
Nalbandian earned a double break lead to 4-0 in the opening set. The Argentine did not face break point during the opening set, and held Chiudinelli to a mere 3 points on the return. A third break of serve came at 5-1, set point for Nalbandian, who closed in 22 minutes.
The wild card continued the momentum in set two, racing to a 3-0 advantage. Nalbandian earned an insurance break to 4-0, aided by a double fault from the Swiss. The Argentine completed the set with three breaks and six consecutive games won.
Nalbandian is set to face 13th seed Gilles Simon in the quarterfinal. The Frenchman downed second seed Andy Roddick in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-3.
