Berdych, Baghdatis win three-setters in Washington Tomas Berdych and Marcos Baghdatis pull out tough victories on Wednesday in Washington. Both players are through to the quarterfinals.

    (1) Tomas Berdych vs. (16) Andrey Golubev 6-3, 5-7, 7-5

Berydch needed two hours and 20 minutes to get past Golubev and reach the quarterfinals of the Legg Mason Classic on Wednesday night. The top-seeded Czech took command early by losing only three points in his first five service games, so one break was enough for him to seize a one-setadvantage.

For Berdych, however, it was difficult the entire rest of the way. Golubev faced no break points in the second set and finally broke served at 6-5 to force a third. The 16th-seeded Kazakh battled back from a donation of serve at 2-2 in the final frame of play, but a poor service game at 5-5 proved to be the final turning point. Berdych served out the proceedings one game later to set up a meeting with Xavier Malisse. The world No. 8 finished with four aces and four double-faults.

    (8) Marcos Baghdatis d. Illya Marchenko 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3

Baghdatis did not face a single break point in the first two sets, but he still needed two hours and 39 minutes to survive Marchenko in the Washington third round on Wednesday. The Cypriot served at just 54 percent, but he won 80 percent of his first-serve points on the way to a quarterfinal showdown against Fernando Verdasco.

A back-and-forth affair featured one break in the first and three in the third. Marchenko stayed alive by pulling through a tight second-set tiebreaker, but the 22-year-old Ukrainian could not sustain the level amidst the pressure of the final set. Baghdatis served horribly in the third and gave one break back, but he eventually finished off the match on serve at 5-3. Marchenko wrapped up his effort with one ace aganst four double-faults.
