Veteran wild card David Nalbandian made the final 16 at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic Wednesday evening, following his straight-set victory over 7th seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
World No. 117 David Nalbandian improved his series record to 3-5 against second-round opponent Stanislas Wawrinka on Wednesday. The 28-year-old converted four of 7 break opportunities to seal a 6-1, 6-3 win in just 69 minutes. The Argentine, taking part in his Washington debut, extended his 2010 season to 13-3.
Nalbandian struck early, taking a 2-1 service break lead in the opening set. An insurance break came for the Argentine at 3-1, as poor serving plagued Wawrinka. Nalbandian went on to close the 29-minute set at 6-1, aided by a double fault from the Swiss.
A more competitive second set contained no breaks of serve until 4-3. Nalbandian went ahead 5-3, securing his second break chance of the set. The triple set point was quickly collected by the wild card, who completed the match in one hour and 9 minutes.
Nalbandian ended the night with 81% of his first-service and 15 of 22 second-serve return points captured.
The former World No. 3 will battle Marco Chiudinelli for a berth in the quarterfinal. The Swiss ousted 10th seed Radek Stepanek in the second round, 6-1, 6-3.
