Tomas Berdych wins his Washington opener in three sets over Dmitry Tursunov on Wednesday. Next up for Berdych is Andrey Golubev.
Tomas Berdych returned to action for the first time since finishing runner-up at Wimbledon on Wednesday night in Washington. It was not easy, but Berdych got past Dmitry Tursunov 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 17 minutes to reach the third round of the Legg Mason Classic.
After exchanging an early pair of breaks, both players held the rest of the way to force a first-set tiebreaker. Berdych eased through it seven points to two, clinching the set when Tursunov tossed in his fifth double-fault.
In surprise fashion, a rusty Tursunov--on the comeback trail from injuries--raised his level instead of going away after the first-set disappointment. The 27-year-old Russian earned one break in the second and that was enough because he saved the only break point he faced.
Nonetheless, Tursunov could not sustain the momentum. Berdych struck for a break and an immediate 2-0 lead in the third frame of play, and from there it was all over. The eighth-ranked Czech lost only six points in four service games despite serving at 40 percent in the third and he closed out the proceedings with a hold at 5-1.
Berdych, the No. 1 seed, fired 12 aces on his way to a third-round encounter with Andrey Golubev. Tursunov recorded four aces but double-faulted seven times.
