  • Verdasco saves match points to oust Berrer

Verdasco saves match points to oust Berrer Fernando Verdasco comes back from the brink of defeat to topple Michael Berrer on Tuesday in Washington. Verdasco is joined in the second round by Xavier Malisse.

    (3) Fernando Verdasco d. Michael Berrer 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(6)

Verdasco fought off two match points in the second set before overcoming Berrer after two hours and 41 minutes in round two of the Legg Mason Classic. Berrer's hot start nearly carried him to victory, as the 47th-ranked German seized the first break of the match in the 10th game to take a one-set advantage.

Berrer surged to a seemingly insurmountable 5-2 lead in the second, but the turning point soo came at 5-3. The underdog held two match points on his own serve only to see Verdasco storm back to break serve and go on a five-game streak. Despite the disappointment, Berrer at least managed to stay competitive in the third as 12 straight holds of serve forced a final tiebreaker. Verdasco faced no more match points and eventually took it eight points to six.

The 10th-ranked Spaniard fired 10 aces but also double-faulted 10 times, and he will go up against Ryan Sweeting in round three. Sweeting upset No. 14 seed Michael Llodra in straight sets.

    Xavier Malisse d. (12) Julien Benneteau 7-5, 6-4

Malisse needed just one hour and 19 minutes to get past Benneteau in second-round action on Tuesday. The 62nd-ranked Belgian, who is already playing his third U.S. Open Series event of the season, took advantage of a rusty Benneteau. Malisse took care of his own game by striking five aces against no double-faults, while the 32nd-ranked Frenchman won only half of his second-serve points and was broken three times.

Next up for Malisse is either Thiemo De Bakker or No. 5 seed John Isner. Malisse defeated Isner earlier this year in Houston.
