  • No promises for Nalbandian on long road back

    8/3/10 5:04 PM | Johan Lindahl
No promises for Nalbandian on long road back David Nalbandian is making no promises about future success after returning to the ATP for the first time in nearly four months with a first-round victory in Washington.

It's all to play for in the case of Nalbandian, the one-time No. 3 who now stands 117 after missing nine months after 2009 knee surgery followed by more injury problems this year.

The Argentine's 62-minute straight-set win over American Rajeev Ram is only the first step in the comeback effort, And the South American is not unaware of how tough his road back will be.

“If I do well, everybody’s going to think I’m back. If I lose, they’ll say, ‘Still a long way to go.’ But that’s the way it is. I’m feeling good.”

He faces a next test against Swiss fifth seed Stan Wawrinka, playing for the first time since a first-round Wimbledon defeat.

No sooner had Nalbandian attempted his comeback this season following his hip operation in May, 2009, than he was bothered by hamstring and abdominal injuries which cut short his return. He managed the Monte Carlo quarter-finals in April and had to take a wild card to get into the Washington field.
