Thiemo De Bakker comes back from a set deficit to beat Lukas Lacko on Monday night in Washington. Ryan Sweeting also advances, taking out fellow American James Blake in three sets.
Thiemo De Bakker d. Lukas Lacko 5-7, 6-3, 6-3
De Bakker survived a back-and-forth affair to topple Lacko in the first round of the Legg Mason Classic after two hours and four minutes of play. Despite losing the first set, De Bakker actually took control early and used one break to build a 5-4 lead. The 21-year-old Dutchman led 40-15 in the 10th game, but he blew two set points--one with a double-fault--and eventually dropped hand. With momentum suddenly in hand, Lacko won the next two games for the set.
From there, however, De Bakker bounced back and maintained his footing the rest of the way. The world No. 46 saved all six of the break points he faced in set two and a second break of his own at 5-3 finished off the set in style. Lacko had two chances to break in the third, but the 22-year-old Slovak converted none and thus his lone donation of serve proved costly. De Bakker nearly squandered a 40-15 advantage at 5-3, but he delivered an ace on break point and eventually held to clinch the victory. No. 5 seed John Isner awaits De Bakker in round two.
(Q) Ryan Sweeting d. (WC) James Blake 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
Blake's woes seemed to be coming to something of an end last week in Los Angeles, where he reached the quarterfinals, but Ryan Sweeting put an end to that notion on Monday. Sweeting defeated his elder fellow American in one hour and 32 minutes to clinch a spot in the Washington second round.
Although things quickly went south, Blake got off to a strong start and earned two breaks in the first set before serving it out at 5-3. Sweeting served at 85 percent in the second and dropped only six points in five service games, so one break of his own was enough to force a final frame of play. Blake could not recover in the third, and Sweeting consolidated the lone break by saving four break points. Next up for the world No. 119 is 14th-seeded Michael Llodra, who had a first-round bye.
