Andy Roddick is slated to return to the ATP World Tour this week, ready to take center stage at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, DC. The three-time former champion enters the tournament as the second seed.
World No. 9 Andy Roddick will begin his quest for ATP World Tour title No. 30 in Washington DC. The American, appearing in his 9th Legg Mason Tennis Classic, finished runner-up to reigning US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro in 2009. The tournament signals the fourth hard-court stop on the famed Olympus US Open Series.
Roddick begins his bid for a fourth Washington crown with a solid 34-8 season record. The 27-year-old American is set to return to competition after reaching the final four in Atlanta last month. Roddick secured a semifinal berth before falling to eventual champion Mardy Fish, 6-7(5), 3-6. The Nebraska native has earned two hard-court titles this year, having taken home top prize in Brisbane (def. Stepanek) and Miami (def. Berdych).
The World No. 9, seeded second behind Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych, tops a potentially tricky half of the draw. Roddick is located in the same half that hosts a talented collection of hard-court seeds, including: No. 4 Marin Cilic, No. 6 Sam Querrey, No. 7 Stanislas Warwrinka, No. 10 Radek Stepanek, No. 11 Lleyton Hewitt, No. 13 Gilles Simon and No. 15 Mardy Fish.
Additional combatants in Roddick’s half are former World No. 3 David Nalbandian, Marco Chiudinelli, Alejandro Falla, Denis Istomin, Kei Nishikori, Janko Tipsarevic and Yen-Hsun Lu, who knocked the American out of Wimbledon in late June.
After an opening-round bye, Roddick looks to a likely second-round encounter with Benjamin Becker of Germany. The nearest seed in the American’s quarter of the draw is Simon, who looms as a probable round of 16 opponent.
Should Roddick pass through the early rounds, he likely faces either Wawrinka or Stepanek in the quarterfinal. Barring a shock upset, the American may square off against Cilic or fellow American Querrey in the semifinal.

I hope he does find his form in DC also, ts38, but he's got one tough draw through which to navigate. I only hope some luck comes his way, or else, he'll be seeded 9th at the USO, should Verdasco go deep in DC, as Andy has SF points to defend in T. However, he could pick up points in Cincy, which could help his USO seeding. For some reason, I get the feeling that he's someone who plays besenjoys doing things by the light of his burning bridges.
I probably sound like a stuck record, but why did he have to take off so many weeks after Miami. He was so match grooved then, but he blew it on the Hawaiian beaches. I sincerely hope that he won't repeat that mistake again in '11. He's skating on thin ice now.
