Andy Murray drew blood after punching the strings of his racket in a futile attempt to stave off a loss in the final of the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles.
The Scot is now without a title since last November after winning an ATP-leading six trophys in 2009.
Murray went down as holder Sam Querrey saved a match point in the second set and fought through into a third for a 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 title win, becoming the first back-to back winner at the event since Andre Agassi in 2001-2002.
"I wasn't expecting to play my best tennis, but wanted to play as many matches as possible," said No. 4 Murray, a late replacement for Novak Djokovic. "It's a lot better playing tournaments of this calibre than practising with my friends in Miami."
"I'm glad I came and I played some good tennis, and definitely it'll help me for Toronto and Cincinnati Masters 100 events later in the month."
Defeat on his first visit to the city will surely sting as much as his badly scraped knuckles for Murray. The top seed failed to close it out while serving for victory up a set and 5-4, Instead, Querrey won a tiebreaker and then finished his comeback with a third set.
"It was a pretty late decision to come here, so obviously I wanted to come and try to win this event, but you have to have realistic expectations," Murray said.
Murray was appearing in his fourth final in California. He won titles in San Jose in 2006 and 2007, and reached the final at Indian Wells in 2009.

isn't better to smash a racquet rather than your knuckles?
rfzr , 8/2/10 7:27 PM
well you dont get warned or fined for smashing your knuckles....
RickyDimon , 8/2/10 9:54 PM
^^^^ That's true Ricky, but people don't call you a bloody idiot if you smash your racket.
cherylmurray , 8/3/10 12:16 AM
Youzhny tactic trumps both, anyway

I couldn't believe my eyes when he let not just one, but FOUR, match points go begging! That was just plain careless. Andy will have to sharpen up his game one hell of a lot if he wants to break the title drought.

Credit should be given to Sam who played a very sensible match. He kept his cool and seized his opportunities when they were presented.

I've seen Andy do the 'bleeding knuckle' before, in frustration, but I've always thought that players should be allowed to smash their racquets - as for not setting an example to children, children are not stupid, they know that they can't smash theirs because their parents can't afford to keep replacing them, and they also know the circumstances under which players do it.
Poor Jankovic, the basketball player, that is so sad, he can't even learn a lesson from it, because the consequences are irreversible. I have seen Serena smash her ankles with her racquet, because that is not a code violation, but doing it on the ground is.

Correction: Apparently I was wrong: it was only one match point, but before that he had a run of breakpoint opportunities - which would have been as good as match points!

I saw Murray smash his knuckles against his racket last year. I don't remember if it was Toronto or Cincy. They had to show a closeup of it and my goodness, that was not nice to see! He had to call the trainer out to bandage his hand.
I didn't see him do it in his match with Querrey, but I missed some of the second and third set. From what I did see, Murray looked pretty good, not his best but capable of winning this match after getting the break to win the first set. I give credit to Querrey for keeping his composure and getting the win.
For the love of heaven, I hope Murray finds another way to vent his frustration! I don't want him doing something that will get him a code violation, but there has to be something that doesn't involve blood!

This is not the first time that Murray does it. Yes it was at the Cincy SF with Fed last year that he hit his knuckle against his racket and caused some bleeding. The same thing happened at the TMC in Shanghai 2008, a match with Fed too. Fed was having a bad back day but still stretched the match to three sets before losing; Murray was frustrated with himself at times and hit his knuckle against his racket. He had to ice the knuckle during break time to stop the pain and the bleeding. The commentators were sympathetic towards Fed for his bad back but not so towards Murray, for his self inflicted pain.

can someone ban ladylulu. what is with people trying to spam on this site?
tj600 , 8/3/10 10:59 AM
tj: isn't this the third in about three weeks? It's v. v. annoying.
Back to Andy who seems to be unravelling at the mo. Upsetting to watch and not looking good for the rest of the American season. Lousy, lousy tie break record too. That self-abuse stuff had stopped as well, so horrid to see it back. Shows to me that he's in mental turmoil. In danger of not making O2 as well, which is a shame 4 me as I have tickets!
Now going to put my head in the sand till coach issue is sorted at least....Come on Golubev, de Bakker, and that one with the hair band.....
deuce , 8/3/10 11:24 AM
Actually, all Murray needs to do is scout on TT for a coach because there seems to be many experts here amongst the posters.
nadline , 8/3/10 11:35 AM
deuce, Murray can make the O2, don't worry.
The one with the hair band is Dolgopolov. I like spelling his name, its a challenge, so many 'o' and the sequence has to be correct. I like the three guys that you mentioned, and I'm waiting to see them in action during the NA hard court swings. Hopefully, they can survive till at least the third round so that I have a chance to see their matches on tv.
Dolgo kid has a very special game, hard to read; both Rafa and Llodra (who played Dolgo at the Eastbourne SF) said the same thing about Dolgo's game. I like De Bakker's game too, saw his matches against Tsonga and I think Ferrero during the clay season, he has a good game, can play at the net and a good serve. Golubev seems to me like he is copying Fed's game, esp that SHBH; gosh even that sweeping his fringe (can't see he has any fringe though) with one finger, like the way Fed did. Golubev has solid ground strokes and good intelligent serves too.
