It took him more than a decade and a half but former great Ivan Lendl finally looks ready to return to tennis.
The eight-time Grand Slam champion will make his long-awaited senior tour debut in Paris next October 1-3. The city is familiar territory to the Czech-born American, who won three Roland Garros titles. This autumn, he will again be facing John McEnroe, whom he beat for the 1984 french trophy.
While Lendl measures his words after keeping his distance from tennis and concentrating on golf after retirement, McEnroe is already savouring the meeting.
"Oh boy, l’m looking forward to it. We had some great matches together but it’s been a long time and he hasn’t played for more than 15 years so I think we need to discuss a few things, both on and off the court," said the American, a fixture in the senior game at age 51.
"I know he’s been working most of the last year to get back into the type of shape he needs to be in, because it doesn’t get any easier as you get older. But we’ll be giving it our all, that’s for sure.”
Lendl, father of five daughters, has spent most of his post-tennis life on the golf course, but at age 50 will return to his roots. Lendl and Mac met 36 times during their playing careers, with the Czech leading the head-to-head 21-15.
