The U.S. Open Series has the rest of the summer all to itself as the Legg Mason Classic begins in Washington. Tomas Berdych, Fernando Verdasco, and John Isner are part of a crowded top section of the draw.
Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych returns to action this week as the U.S. Open Series heats up with the Legg Mason Classic, a 500-point tournament in Washington, D.C.
Berdych's recent surge up the rankings has him ahead of both Andy Roddick and Fernando Verdasco and therefore the No. 1 seed in D.C. With a loaded field of players in seach of both competitive match practice and valuable ranking points, however, the Czech has no easy path through the tournament.
Following a first-round bye (along with all of the 16 seeds), Berdych could meet Richard Gasquet in round three. Gasquet, who received a wild card, is coming off a runner-up showing in Gstaad. Berdych is also on a collision course for the quarterfinals with John Isner. The 6'9'' American recently reached the Atlanta final and he toppled Berdych in last year's D.C. quarters.
Verdasco is in a second section of the draw that is both difficult but also wide open. The talent there is impressive, but none of the participants is in particularly stellar form. Marcos Baghdatis made it to the L.A. quarters, Ernests Gulbis has been out with an injury and lost early in L.A., and James Blake might be starting to find his game with a quarterfinal performance in L.A.
As the seeds get into action later in the week, some possible second-round matchups to watch include Isner vs. Thiemo De Bakker (rematch of Wimbledon second round), and Blake vs. Michael Llodra.
