Richard Gasquet defeats Yuri Schukin in straight sets on Saturday in Gstaad. Gasquet is through to the final for a meeting with Nicolas Almagro, who got past Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Richard Gasquet booked a spot in the final of the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad on Saturday, ending Yuri Schukin's run with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Gasquet needed one hour and 28 minutes to reach the third ATP title match of his 2010 campaign.
Schukin, a 31-year-old from Kazakhstan, enjoyed a dream week by qualifying for the main draw and advancing to the semis. The world No. 147, however, did not have enough to pull off another upset by toppling Gasquet. Schukin never broke serve (he missed his only two opportunities), so one break was enough for Gasquet in each set.
The 47th-ranked Frenchman recorded six aces and six double-faults on his way to a final showdown against Nicolas Almagro, who ousted Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3 in exactly two hours.
Neither Spaniard faced a single break point in tense opening frame of play that went down to the wire. Gimeno-Traver held one set point, but Almagro eventually took the 'breaker nine points to seven. Bouncing back in the second, Gimeno-Traver struck for the first break of the day midway through the set and served things out from there.
Almagro turned the tide right away in set three, breaking in the second game en route to a quick 3-0 lead. The world No. 18 dropped only seven points in his last five service games and did not face a break point in the third as he served out the match.
Having recently won the Bastad title, Almagro is through to his second ATP final in the last three weeks.
