Nicolas Almagro and Albert Montanes score respective wins over Jeremy Chardy and Albert Montanes on Friday in Gstaad. They are joined in the semifinals by Yuri Schukin, who upset Mikhail Youzhny.
Nicolas Almagro reached the semifinals of the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Jeremy Chardy on Friday. Almagro needed one hour and 22 minutes to set up a clash with unseeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Gstaad's No. 2 seed, already 2-0 against Chardy coming into the match, cruised through the first set with little trouble. Chardy, however, had several chances to force a decisive third. The Frenchman led by a break in the second, held two set points at 5-4, and also led 5-2 in the tiebreaker. Nonetheless, Almagro won the last five points to clinch a hard-fought victory.
In Friday's other French-Spanish showdown, Richard Gasquet ousted Albert Montanes 7-6(5), 6-4. The two players exchanged one break of serve each en route to a first-set tiebreaker, during which Gasquet struck for a critical mini-break at 5-5 with a backhand pass. The 47th-ranked Frenchman took care of his next service point to pocket the set.
One break was enough for Gasquet in the second, as he lost only seven points in five service games and never faced a break point. The No. 7 seed finished off the proceedings with a solid hold at 5-4, clinching the win with a backhand volley.
Next up for Gasquet is Yuri Schukin, who upset No. 1 seed Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. The qualifier from Kazakhstan prevailed after two hours and 12 minutes of play.
