  • Youzhny wins in Gstaad, defending champ Bellucci out

    7/28/10 1:29 AM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny wins in Gstaad, defending champ Bellucci out Mikhail Youzhny makes quick work of Marc Gicquel on Monday in Gstaad. Youzhny is joined in the second round by Marco Chiudinelli, who knocked out 2009 champion Thomaz Bellucci.

    (1) Mikhail Youzhny d. (LL) Marc Gicquel 6-2, 6-2

Gicquel went in and out of the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad main draw in a flash. The 33-year-old Frenchman gained entry as lucky loser earlier on Tuesday when Evgeny Korolev withdrew due to a back injury, then Gicquel lost to Youzhny in just one hour and 12 minutes.

Youzhny had no trouble in any aspect of the game, as he broke serve five times in eight return games. The 14th-ranked Russian saved all three of the break points he faced in set one, and it hardly mattered that he donated his serve once in the second. Youzhny struck five aces and won 25 of 30 first-serve points to set up a meeting with Swiss wild card Alexander Sadecky.

    Marco Chiudinelli d. (3) Thomaz Bellucci 7-6(6), 0-6, 6-4

Chiudinelli needed two hours and 15 minutes to score a big upset of the defending champion on Tuesday in Gstaad. Although his title defense never really got off the ground this week, Bellucci did not go down without a fight. After dropping the first set in a tense tiebreaker, the 21st-ranked Brazilian stormed back without losing a single game in the second.

The back-and-forth affair saw Chiudinelli regain the momentum with an early break in set three. Bellucci had three chances in total to get back on serve--including two in the final game of the match--but failed to convert. The 63rd-ranked Swiss battled back from 15-40 down at 5-4 to hold on for victory. Chiudinelli advanced to second-round encounter with Igor Andreev despite double-faulting six times against only two aces.
