Olivier Rochus def. Philipp Petzschner 6-2, 6-3

Olivier Rochus had no difficulty taking out Philipp Petzschner in the opening round on Tuesday in Umag. Rochus was utterly dominant in the straight set win. He never faced a break point in the 1 hour 25 minute match.

Petzschner was under constant pressure in the opening set. Rochus earned 7 of his 8 break points in the match in the first frame. Petzschner surrendered a pair of break points to give Rochus a commanding lead.

The second set was not quite as dominant from Rochus. Early in the set, the Belgium earned a single break point chance. He was able to convert, and Petzschner never managed to dig his way back into the match. Rochus will take on Andreas Seppi in the second round.

Potito Starace def. Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0

The Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky continued to have trouble on clay on Tuesday. He was ousted in the first round by clay court specialist Potito Starace. The Italian came out firing in the opening set. He served at a healthy 74% and faced no break points.

Stakhovsky did not fare nearly as well. Starace had 3 chances to break serve; he was able to convert on two of them.

The second set was easily the most competitive of the match. The two men traded breaks of serve to force a tiebreaker. Stakhovsky was able to scrape out a 7-5 win in the breaker to force a third set. Unfortunately for the fans however, the decider was not competitive at all.

Stakhovsky won a pitiful 7 points in the entire set and he was not able to put a game on the board. Starace will take on Bjorn Phau in the second round.
