James Blake is quietly celebrating his first match win since March as a knee injury finally fades away.
Part of the solution appears to be a possible decision to start taking painkillers, a tactic the 30-year-old avoided for the past year with little or no result.
Blake reached the second round of the ATP event in Los Angeles with a defeat of Argentine Leonardo Mayer. The former Top 10 player now stands 117.
"I'm really happy with this result," said Blake. "I'm starting to play well and I'm healthy again. It's a great feeling. Last year was bad for me, but I'm hoping to turn it around this year."
Blake showed his return to fitness as he sprinted freely for a return winner on match point as he dispatched Mayer, who beat him on clay in a previous meeting at Roland Garros in 2009. "Physically I'm at 100 percent."
The veteran only returned to the court last month, losing at Eastbourne, Wimbledon and Atlanta in the first round. "I feel great and I've not felt that way for awhile. My goal is just to stay healthy and try to play my best."
