Mikhail Youzhny headlines this week's field in Gstaad as the No. 1 seed. More of an all-court player, however, Youzhny will be challenger for the title by a host of clay-court specialists.
While the U.S. Open Series trudges on in America, clay-courters have one last time to shine on the slow stuff this week. One of the two clay-court events is underway in Gstaad, as top-seeded Mikhail Youzhny leads the way at the Allianz Suisse Open.
Joining Youzhny in the main draw are familiar Spanish clay-court faces, including Nicolas Almagro, Albert Montanes, and Tommy Robredo. Montanes has already advanced to the second round, outlasting countryman Pere Riba in a third-set tiebreaker on Sunday.
In addition to Youzhny, Almagro, Montanes, and Robredo, Thomaz Bellucci, Victor Hanescu, Richard Gasquet, and Paul-Henri make up Gstaad's seeded ranks. Bellucci is the defending champion and he is set for a tricky opener against Marco Chiudinelli, who won the doubles title last year in Gstaad.
The winner of that match will run into Igor Andreev, who took out Florent Serra 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in his opener. Andreev is part of a strong unseeded contingent that includes Andrey Golubev, Denis Istomin, Jeremy Chardy, and Jarkko Nieminen. Golubev won a huge 500-point title in Hamburg on Sunday and Istomin is coming off a quarterfinal performance.
