  • Murray headlines field for Farmers Classic

    7/26/10 1:21 AM | Kelli DeMario
Murray headlines field for Farmers Classic Andy Murray makes his return to the ATP World Tour this week, leading a list of 28 combatants set to compete at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles, California. The 23-year-old Scot enters the event as a top-seeded wild card.

World No. 4 Andy Murray accepted a last-minute wild card entry for the Farmers Classic, replacing World No. 2 Novak Djokovic, who withdrew for undisclosed personal reasons. The Los Angeles tournament signals the ATP World Tour's second hard-court stop on the famed Olympus US Open Series.

Murray commences his first Farmers Classic with a 22-10 season record. The 23-year-old Scot is set to return to action after reaching the final four at Wimbledon in early July. Murray battled into the semifinal before falling to eventual champion Rafael Nadal, 4-6, 6-7(6), 4-6.

The World No. 4 leads a group of talented hard-court seeds which includes: defending champion Sam Querrey, Marcos Baghdatis, Feliciano Lopez, Ernests Gulbis, Janko Tipsarevic, Horacio Zeballos and Mardy Fish.

Murray is located in the same half of the draw that hosts No. 4 Lopez, No. 5 Gulbis and No. 8 Fish, who sealed a title-winning run in Atlanta Sunday afternoon (def. Isner). Other competitors in the Scot’s section are Karol Beck, Benjamin Becker, 2007 finalist James Blake, Alejandro Falla, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Lukas Lacko, Xavier Malisse, Leonardo Mayer and Dudi Sela.

After an opening-round bye, Murray looks to a possible second-round encounter with Gabashvili. The nearest seed in the Scot’s half of the draw is Delray Beach champion Gulbis, looming as a probable quarterfinal opponent. Should Murray pass into the semifinal, he likely faces World No. 26 Lopez.

The second-seeded Querrey, also a recipient of a first-round bye, highlights a favorable bottom half of the draw. The defending champion’s closest seeded player is Zeballos, seeded seventh. Provided the seeds hold as the draw progresses, the 22-year-old will take on former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis for a place in the final.
