Top seed Nikolay Davydenko will look to right a poor summer season in Umag, Croatia, as the European clay court season finally comes to a close.
With three tournaments to choose from this coming week and most of the top players still on holiday, Umag will provide a good opportunity for an enterprising player to pick up 250 ranking points.
Nikolay Davydenko is the No. 1 seed. The Russian struggled with injury for the entirety of the clay court season. He went out in Indian Wells and came back in time to compete in Halle, Germany. His return to play did not yield the sort of results one would expect of a top ten player (Davydenko is ranked 6 in the world).
A series of second round losses followed the Russian to Hamburg, where he lost in the third round to eventual champion Andrey Golubev. Davydenko’s form suggests that a title in Umag is questionable.
The other top seeds in the draw are Jurgen Melzer of Austria, who made the final in Hamburg last week, Croat veteran Ivan Ljubicic and Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Melzer has been playing good tennis, but he could well be tired from his run in Hamburg. This may be a prime time for somebody unexpected to come through and take the title. Philipp Petzschner is the No. 5 seed and he has been coming on of late. Keep an eye on him to come through on bottom half.
