Igor Andreev takes out Florent Serra in three sets on Sunday. He is joined in the Gstaad second round by Albert Montanes, who outlasted Pere Riba in a third-set tiebreaker.
Igor Andreev d. Florent Serra 6-4, 2-6, 6-4
Andreev kicked off the Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad with a victory over Serra that took one hour and 44 minutes. The Russian struck seven aces on his way to a second-round meeting with either Marco Chiudinelli or defending champion Thomaz Bellucci.
With his backhand constantly being peppered by Serra, Andreev produced his best tennis when it mattered most. He got off to a strong start, then recovered decisively in the third following a second-set hiccup. Andreev actually won fewer points than the Frenchman (87-86), but proved to be the better man on break points.
(4) Albert Montanes d. Pere Riba 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5)
Montanes stormed back from a major deficit to beat Riba in two hours and 14 minutes on Sunday. The back-and-forth affair saw Montanes twice give back breaks in the first set before losing it 6-4. Having thrown away the momentum, the fourth-seeded Spaniard fell into a considerable hole by going down 2-0 in the second.
However, that is when the tide turned. Riba quickly gave back the break and although he showed signs of recovering in the third set, the underdog never could regain control of the match. Montanes, who consistently took advantage of his opponent's second serves and benefited from nine Riba double-faults, pulled out a tense final tiebreaker seven points to five.
