  • US Open hyping Del Potro return - maybe

US Open hyping Del Potro return - maybe US Open officials, desperate to make sure their defending champion fronts up for the August 30 start of the major, may be thinking a bit optimistically about the fitness of Juan Martin Del Potro.

The Argentine who has not played since January before undergoing wrist surgery and a long recovery which continues to this day, is listed as an entry to the last Grand Slam of the season.

But despite New York officials broadcasting their version of the situation - Del Potro is already back on court and hitting- the truth from South America is quite a bit more restrained.

In fact, the Argentine's camp says their man has not yet picked up a racket and will give no timetable as to a possible return to action for the 21-year-old still ranked seventh in the world.

Last September, Del Potro made what was considered a breakthrough as he won the Open in the fifth set over Roger Federer. He then did little until losing the November final of the year-end event in London to Nikolay Davydenko.

Del Potro said in a Twitter feed that he is "getting better” but put no date on a comeback. The official target is the Thailand Open in late September, with the Davis Cup semi-final in France the week before not even a sure thing.

“I still haven’t picked up a racket, this is why I can’t set an exact date,” said the South American. The Americans insist that Del Potro is “expected to return to Grand Slam competition,” hedging their bets while striving to make it appear he will make it to New York.
