John Isner and Mardy Fish power their way into the Atlanta semifinals on Friday. In all-American clashes, Isner eases past Michael Russell and Fish rolls over Taylor Dent.
John Isner finally enjoyed a quick match, routing Michael Russell 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon. Isner needed just 56 minutes to set up a semifinal showdown against former college rival Kevin Anderson.
The 6'9'' American, who outlasted Gilles Muller in a third-set tiebreaker on Wednesday in his second match since winning the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon, took control right from the start against Russell. Isner broke serve at 2-1 in the first set with a stellar drop-shot and added an insurance break at 4-1 before serving it out.
Russell donated a backhand error on break point in the first game of set two to all but end his chances. The 32-year-old won a mere two return points in the second frame of play and therefore never came close to getting back on serve. Isner, who also broke for a 3-0 lead, fired four aces in four points during the fourth game of the set. Atlanta's No. 2 seed finished with 11 aces and won 25 of 28 first-serve points.
"The match was pretty quick which was lucky for me," Isner explained. "The sun is so intense. It's brutal out there. But I felt better today than I did the other night. You have to get acclimated."
Mardy Fish joined Isner in the semifinals in similar fashion, also losing just three games in a 6-3, 6-0 destruction of Taylor Dent. Fish, who is coming off a title in Newport, fired seven aces and never faced a break point.
"I played pretty flawless tonight," said the No. 6 seed, who will go up against good friend and occasional doubles partner on Saturday. "I'm extremely happy."
